Put the Home in Motorhome; Five Design & Decor Tips

The beauty of hitting the road for a touring adventure is travelling wherever you want to go and having all your home comforts at your fingertips.

Your motorhome, caravan, or campervan is more than just transport, it’s your temporary home. While practicality and functionality are key for life on wheels, it’s easy to overlook the little touches that truly make your space feel like a home away from home.

Read on to discover our five caravan decorating ideas to make your caravan, motorhome or campervan interior feel like home.

Personal Touches

The easiest way to make your motorhome feel more homely is to make it personal to you. Think of it as decorating with memories!

A simple way to achieve this is to use photographs or postcards from your travels as decor. These reminders of happy memories from your touring holidays will be sure to make you smile.

You could frame these individually and mount them to the walls, or create a collage with multiple photos and postcards combined into one larger piece.

Another way to bring a touch of your personality into your space is to add a few cherished trinkets from home. There’s nothing more comforting than returning to your unit after a day’s exploring and settling down with a cup of tea in your favourite mug whilst snuggling up with a cushion gifted by a loved one. Whether it’s funky crockery, sentimental magnets or captivating artwork, make the space an extension of your home.

Splashes of Colour

It is not uncommon for standard motorhome and caravan interiors to feel a little blank, ready for personalisation, so adding a few colour accents can instantly increase the cosy factor!

Painting the walls can be one option to add colour if you’re a fan of bold colour schemes. We recommend sticking to lighter shades to help make your van space feel brighter and more spacious. Darker colours can make the space feel more confined. Just remember to ensure your space is well ventilated, follow any manufacturer’s guidelines for both your unit and the paint, and sufficiently prep where you wish to paint.

If you’re unsure of the scheme you want in your interior, or like the idea of changing colours whenever you fancy, then colourful accessories are your best friend!

Add in a few eye-catching cushions and throws to your living space to contrast a neutral wall colour, or introduce a calming colour to your bedding, such as sage green or soft, earthy browns, to create a soothing and relaxing space to unwind after the day’s adventures.

You can even take this a step further and introduce a brightly coloured plate set, or a patterned tablecloth for the dining space.

Soft Furnishings

After a day’s exploring, you want your motorhome to be an inviting sanctuary. Introducing soft textiles to your interior design will help create a space that not only feels homely, but the mixture of textures will help you feel calm, cosy and revitalised for more holiday adventures.

Add plush cushions to your living space to relax into, or snuggle up with a chunky blanket whilst reading a book.

You can also introduce warmth and softness underfoot by adding some rugs onto the flooring, or by adding throws onto your bedding.

Alternatively, reupholstering old furniture can breathe fresh life into your living area and there are companies available that offer reupholstery services for motorhomes and caravans. Choose fabrics that reflect your style and personality, with colour palettes that tie together your cushions and curtains. If you choose to opt for the DIY route, we would recommend researching fire safety regulations and considering fire-resistant materials.

Elevate Your Kitchen

Whilst being a functional space, the kitchen is often the heart of any home – including a motorhome. From making a cup of tea to start your day to preparing a delicious meal to watch the sunset from your pitch, taking the time to make your kitchen as inviting as possible will instantly make your touring unit feel like a home from home.

Bring in your favourite pieces of crockery, cutlery and mugs, whether that be in relaxing colours or vibrant patterns – the choice is yours!

You can opt to decorate the kitchen itself in a few different ways. Introducing a splashback to the wall not only makes cleaning easier but can add a fantastic dash of colour to the space.

If you’re in the mood for a bit more DIY or have an older unit that needs a refresh, you could consider painting the interior cabinets. Oil-based paint is easy to clean and durable, but due to the strong smell, these paints do require plenty of ventilation and wearing a mask. Alternatively, you can opt for water-based paints that release less fumes but are often the more expensive option.

Whichever paint you choose, make sure to lightly sand and prime your doors before painting to ensure the paint lasts as long as possible. Always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

If painting the doors seems too daunting, you could also try a vinyl wrap for the cabinets for a quick and stylish refresh.

Prepare for Rainy Days

Sometimes the British weather dictates more indoor time than planned and although there are options for rainy-day adventures near our parks, creating an inviting space in your unit for extra hours inside can make all the difference to a relaxing getaway.

Be sure to pack your favourite hobbies for your holiday, such as a good book, board games, or crafting hobbies, to turn a drizzly afternoon into a delightful one.

Incorporate space-saving storage solutions into your motorhome to make room for all your essentials, whilst creating additional space to house a few hobby items.

Add extra storage baskets and boxes to cupboards and wardrobes to fill with books, board games and crafts. Look for stackable boxes that are easy to access.

Another space-saving solution is floating shelf baskets, that are attached to the wall. These are great in the living or bedroom area for storing things that you need to hand, such as tablets, headphones, books, notepads or stationary. You can also opt for shelving with rails to keep everything in place when on the move.

However you decide to decorate your motorhome or caravan, creating a space that feels unique and functional for you will provide that perfect harmony for your touring adventures.
