Five Steps to Getting your Caravan or Motorhome Ready for the New Season

As winter draws closer to the end and spring settles on the horizon, it is the perfect time to make sure that your caravan or motorhome is ready for the new season ahead.

Here are our five steps to getting ready for your touring adventures at our parks in the upcoming year.

1.Safety First

Before heading back out onto the road, your safety and the safety of your passengers should be paramount.

First of all check all alarms and sensors are in good working order, such as your smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, security alarm and your tilt sensor. Give these all a test and make sure they are fully audible, replacing any batteries or units where required.

Check your gas cylinder and hoses over for any visible damage, and see if your gas appliances are working sufficiently. If you are in any doubt, be sure to either replace the unit or call in a gas-certified contractor for a thorough inspection.

If you have a fire extinguisher in your caravan or motorhome, give this a check over as well for any signs of damage, and ensure that the expiry date has not passed.

 2. Sterilise the Water Systems

There’s nothing worse than getting ready to relax on your holiday and finding that you have issues with your water system!

Do your best to avoid this by giving your water tanks a check-over and sterilise before you head back out on the road.

If you have drained your tanks before the winter season, this is a good time to test for any leaks. Reconnect the pipes and run water through the whole system, checking along the way for signs of leaks and that all your taps are working.

As there will likely have been residue water left in the tanks whilst not in use, this can lead to a bacteria build-up which can make you ill so it is a good idea to sterilise the tanks before using the water again.

Ensure the tank is still drained, and run a cleaning solution into the system, allowing it to stand for 12 – 24 hours (following the instructions on your chosen cleaning solution) and then flushing through the system.

3. Be Ready for the Road

As well as checking the interior systems for wear and tear, don’t forget to make sure your motorhome or caravan is safe for use on the road.

Give your headlights and brake lights a test and ensure they are all in good working condition, whilst also checking the housings for any signs of deterioration or cracking.

Carry out vehicle checks such as testing the brakes, checking windscreen wipers and mirrors for damage, and making sure your oil and screenwash levels are topped up. You may even consider getting a vehicle service carried out for that extra peace of mind.

Don’t forget to also check your hitch lock and wheelclamp over for any signs of damage or deterioration.

Finally, it is vital to check your tyres over before setting off on your journey. This is particularly important if your tourer has been standing still over winter as this can put extra strain on the tyres.

Ensure the pressure level and tyre tread level is sufficient, whilst also keeping an eye out for any damage such as cracks and bulges. If you have any doubts, get the tyres replaced as it is vitally important that they are in good working order for your trips on the road.

It is also a good idea to check your wheel nuts for any signs of rust and give them a tighten.

4. Get Spring-Ready with a Clean

The final step to being ready for the road is to give your motorhome or caravan a thorough clean, inside and out, so that it feels fresh and tidy for your next adventure.

Opening all the windows and thoroughly airing out the motorhome or caravan is the best way to start combatting any moisture build-up that might have gathered over the winter months.

Check around the interior for any visible signs of damp, and don’t forget to pay particular attention to upholstery and fabric and have a good look around the window and door seals to ensure none of these are broken and letting water in.

Give the interior a dust over and wash any surfaces as required. Give areas such as your appliances, fridge, toilet, windows and vents a thorough clean-over to ensure their longevity.

If your motorhome or caravan has been stored outside for winter, especially if it has been homed under trees, you may want to also freshen up the exterior with a clean. Don’t forget to finish up with a bit of wax to keep that sparkly clean finish for as long as possible and protect against the good old British weather!
