From a Victorian Town to the Valley of Invention: 72 Hours in Bridgnorth
From the Valley of Invention to the highest hill in Shropshire, there is plenty to explore in and around Bridgnorth in South Shropshire.
If you are planning a trip to our Stanmore Hall Touring Park, we have put together a 72-hour itinerary to help you plan your adventures!
DAY ONE: Explore High and Low in Bridgnorth
Originally a bustling river port, Bridgnorth is now a picturesque market town split by the River Severn and located 3.5 miles away from our Stanmore Hall Touring Park.
The two sections of the town, High Town and Low Town, are joined by ancient steps and a Victorian funicular railway.
Start your day by visiting the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, the oldest and steepest inland funicular railway, and travel between the two sections of the town. The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway is currently closed for the rebuilding of a neighbouring wall, but please check their website for up to date information.
Take a stroll through the Castle Gardens and enjoy a rest amongst the flowers with a view of the bandstand. Don’t forget to stop by the ruins of Bridgnorth Castle, that now lean at an angle four times that of the leaning tower of Pisa!
In the afternoon, grab some lunch at the Refreshment Room at the Severn Valley Railway, before taking a trip on a heritage train along 16 miles of beautiful countryside scenery.
Travel all the way to Kidderminster, or make a stop at Highley station and visit the Engine Room, where you can see a fantastic selection of out-of-service trains, from King George VI’s royal carriage to a Travelling Post Office.
Head back to Bridgnorth station and finish your day with some food in the many eateries in the town. Perhaps you will visit the rustic Stable Bar and pair your meal with one of their famous cocktails, grab a traditional dish and a local ale at The Royle, or choose a flavour-filled, seasonal meal from The Atrium.
DAY TWO: Discover the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
Only a 23-minute drive from our Stanmore Hall Touring Park, the town of Ironbridge is a fantastic option for a day out.
Famous for the Iron Bridge, the first structure in the world created from cast iron, it is also one of the first places in the UK to be named a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see when visiting the town.
Spend the morning wandering up the High Street and exploring the eateries and independent shops that line the street along the River Severn. From teddy bears to books, there are many treasures to be found.
Following this, we would recommend taking a look at the ten museums that form the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. This incredible range of museums span across the Ironbridge Valley of Invention, and there is sure to be something to grab your interest.
If you are looking for interactive fun for all ages, Blists Hill Victorian Town is a must. This open-air living museum carefully recreates a Victorian town, from authentic shops to craftspeople working in traditional methods.
For those wanting to craftsmanship at its finest, take a visit to Jackfield Tile Museum and discover the history behind British tile designers. With a vast collection of tiles and designs from famous artists such as Salvador Dali and William Morris, this is a fascinating museum.
Or if ceramics are more your thing, stop by the Coalport China Museum and find an array of beautiful ceramics all made within the building. From exquisite china cups to ceramics fit for a Queen, you can even watch demonstrations of ceramic making and decorating.
To finish off your day, grab a tasty meal in one of the restaurants in Ironbridge. Try the White Hart, a rustic country inn that offers fine dining, or grab a cocktail and pizza at Cleo’s of Ironbridge.
DAY THREE: Grab Your Walking Boots
South Shropshire is an enchanting landscape of rolling hills and lush countryside just waiting to be explored.
A 25-minute drive from Stanmore Hall will take you to Brown Clee Hill, the highest hill in Shropshire, located in the Shropshire Hills. An Area of Outstanding Beauty, you will discover breathtaking views from the top of Abdon Burf, the highest point of the hill at 540 metres above sea level.
The climb to the top is approximately 11km along ancient paths and will take you 3 to 4 hours. Take a packed lunch with you and enjoy an al fresco picnic surrounded by stunning scenery.
After working up an appetite in the great outdoors, head to a local country pub for some delicious food.
Rustic and charming, visit the Boyne Arms in Burwarton or The Pheasant at Neenton for hearty meals in a cosy setting.
